Android KitKat Now Running on Over 20 Percent of Android Devices

The latest version of Android KitKat us publicly available version of
Google's Android mobile and tablet operating system,
is now running on over 20 percent of Android devices
that check into Google Play.

The Mountain View giant, sharing the Google Play
distribution data of Android devices with different
versions of the operating system for the 7-day
period ending August 12, show that the share
KitKat is receiving steady rise when it comes to
the latest version of the OS while a steady decline
as far as the previous version Jelly Bean goes.

According to the data released on the Android
Developers' webpage , Android 4.4.x KitKat climbed
up the charts from 17.9 percent in the
corresponding 7-day period in July, to 20.9
percent in August - an increase of 3 percent. In
June, Google's Android KitKat version had reached
the 13.6 percent mark.

The various iterations of the Jelly Bean still power
the majority of Android devices, with the combined
percentage of 54.2 percent - with Android 4.1.x on
26.5 percent devices, Android 4.2.x on 19.8 percent
and Android 4.3 on 7.9 percent devices. Last
month, Android Jelly Bean's combined share was
56.5 percent in March.

Android 4.0.x or Ice Cream Sandwich, in Google's
latest report, registered a share of 10.6 percent,
when compared to 11.4 percent last month.

Android Gingerbread (v 2.3.3-2.3.7) and Android
2.2 Froyo's device distribution shares are 13.6
percent and 0.7 percent respectively in in August,
compared to corresponding 13.5 percent and 0.7
percent last month.

Google also noted, "This data is gathered from the
new Google Play Store app, which supports Android
2.2 and above, devices running older versions are
not included. However, in August, 2013, versions
older than Android 2.2 accounted for about 1% of
devices that checked in to Google servers."

The OpenGL version, on the other hand, saw
OpenGL 1.1 at 0.1 percent; OpenGL 2.0 at
dominating 80.2 percent, and OpenGL version 3.0
steadily rising to 19.7 percent. Last month, the
OpenGL version data revealed that OpenGL 1.1
continued with its 0.1 percent share; OpenGL 2.0
was at 83.6 percent, while the OpenGL version 3.0
came at 18.2 percent.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Launched in India with Android Kitkat

Samsung took the wraps off its latest Galaxy
smartphone, the Galaxy Alpha. The South Korean
electronics giant is calling the Galaxy Alpha"the
evolution of Galaxy Design", touting its "metal
frame, elegantly curved corners, and a tactile soft
back cover".

The South Korean manufacturer has announced
that the Galaxy Alpha will be globally released
sequentially starting September in over 150
countries, but the company did not officialy reveal
the pricing of the device. However, a report
pegged the off-contract price of the device at
$689 (approximately Rs. 42,250).

Samsung says the newly-unveiled Galaxy Alpha with
metal frame is built using "sophisticated and
compact construction techniques."

The Galaxy Alpha
was previously previewed by the company at a
yachting event in Moscow.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha runs the latest Android
4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box. It features a 4.7-
inch HD (720x1280 pixels) Super AMOLED display.

The handset sports a sleek profile with dimensions
132.4x65.5x6.7mm and weighs 115 grams.

Much like recently released high-end smartphones
- the Samsung Galaxy Alpha also comes with
the LTE Cat.6 support denoting LTE-A speeds of
up to 300Mbps (peak download rates).
The Galaxy Alpha is powered by an octa-core
chipset, most probably Samsung's Exynos SoC, with
quad-core 1.8GHz and quad-core 1.3GHz. The
smartphone also comes in a quad-core variant with
a clock speed of 2.5GHz, presumably the
Snapdragon 805 SoC the other LTE-A smartphones
are carrying.

Considering that Samsung launched the octa-core
variant of the Galaxy S5 in India, we can expect
the company to announce the octa-core variant of
the Galaxy Alpha, and may bring the LTE-A
version later.

There is 2GB of RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage,
which is non-expandable. The Galaxy Alpha sports a
12-megapixel rear camera and also includes 2.1-
megapixel front-facing camera. It packs an
1860mAh battery.

Apart from LTE, other connectivity options include
Micro-USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE, 3G,
and NFC. The Galaxy Alpha, much like the flagship
Galaxy S5, comes with fingerprint scanner.

The company notes that the Galaxy Alpha at launch
will be available in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White,
Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue colour
variants.

Xiaomi Mi3 second units went on sale on Flipkart few days back at 2 PM. Flipkart and Xiaomi has announced that the week’s stock sold out in 5 seconds.

Last week’s Mi3 stock sold out in 38 minutes and 50 seconds, mainly due to server issues on Flipkart.

In first sale,Xiaomi reportedly sold 10,000 units of Mi3s.

Today the company confirmed that 20,000 Mi3 units have been sold on Flipkart since launch.

Prior to this week’s sale Flipkart sent out instructions to registered users on how to add Mi3 to their shopping cart once the sale opened, so that they can complete the purchase later.

Flipkart saw 2,50,000 users simultaneously accessing the Mi3 page, four times higher than the heaviest traffic once the sale openedat 2 PM, said the company.

Even though users followed all the instructions and logged in 2 to 3 hours before the sale, most of them were disappointed when then saw “Out of stock...!” message before adding it to the cart. Some users even saw “Sorry, you haven’t registered...!”, despite registering for the sale.

Since the company is importing less number of units per week, the demand is likely to be higher for the next few weeks.

Registrations for August 5th sale has started.

Registration is mandatory for the next sale, even though if you have registered for July 22nd and July 29th sale...
